Step-Down piecing

I’ve been watching Sarah Fielke’s course, Big techniques from small scraps at She has such wonderful ideas to break free from all those traditional rules of cutting everything straight, matching the points, etc., etc. Don’t get me wrong, I think the rules are important. You just need to listen to your inner voice and not let them tie you into a straight-jacket. I want to make more than one of the course projects, but this is the first one I’ve actually gotten done. It uses the technique of step-down piecing and has tons of partial seems. She actually makes that easy! Well, I didn’t use her block measurements. I wanted a bigger block so I could fussy-cut those turtles from a bit of fabric in my stash. My big squares are 6 1/2 inches. The pale green didn’t photograph very well.  But you get the idea.
